"I go visit my mother" or "I go visiting my mother"?

เมื่อไหร่ที่มีกริยาตามหลังกริยา go แล้วบางครั้งรูปแบบที่ถูกต้องสำหรับกริยาที่สองที่ตามหลังกริยา go นั้นจะเป็น gerund (“-ing form”) นอกนั้นแล้วรูปแบบที่ถูกต้องก็จะต้องตามด้วย infinitive(รูปกริยาที่มี to นำหน้าและทำหน้าที่เป็นนาม) มันจะขึ้นอยู่กับคำกริยานั้นๆ

สำหรับกริยาที่เป็นรูปแบบของการกระทำ(activities) เช่น shop, swim, dance จะใช้  go + gerund (“-ing form”)

• She goes shopping during her lunch hour.
• We went swimming after work.
• Do you wanna go dancing tonight?

สำหรับกริยาอื่นๆ รวมถึง visit จะใช้ go + the infinitive:

• I go to visit my mother on weekends.
• We’ll go to see the accountant together.
• They didn’t go to eat breakfast until noon.

จากที่กล่าวมา โครงสร้างของ [go + infinitive], นั้น ในส่วนของ “to” ก็อาจจะละไว้ ไม่ต้องมีก็ได้ เช่น

• I go visit my mother on weekends. (แทนการใช้ “I go to visit…”)
• We’ll go see the accountant together. (แทนการใช้ “We’ll go to see…”)
• They didn’t go eat breakfast until noon. (แทนการใช้ “They didn’t go to eat…”)

อย่างไรก็ตามถ้ามี go ปรากฏในรูปแบบอื่น เช่น goes, went, หรือ going, จะไม่สามารถละ “to” ออกจากประโยคได้

• He goes to visit his mother on weekends.
• We went to see the account together.  
• She is going to see the accountant by herself.
